Manhole Cover Art

January 14th, 2007 at 12:13 am

As you might imagine, there are a lot of differences between Japan and the US. One interesting thing is that the manholes in Japan are often decorated in a theme of the city where they are. Here are a few that I came across today while walking to the store:

Obviously, having these specially made is more expensive that getting a generic cover. Is this a good use of taxpayer money in your opinion or would it be better used in other areas?

I think they are pretty cool looking, but would think that sadly here in America they would likely be stolen for private art collections.

Is this you Ben Affleck look alike???

I yhink these are cool , but I do not think taxpayer's dollars should be spent on them. I checked out Lux's link and those are nice

I think that its great that taxpayer dollars are spent on them. Better that then ... well, don't get me started! Smile In Seattle we have dance steps in our sidewalks in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Been there for at least 25 years.

That is beautiful! Thanks for sharing.

I do find it interest that the manhole covers are rectangular though. The ones in America are circular so that there is no way it can fall down the hole. I wonder how the Japanese deal with this issue?

I like them. Considering some of the "art" our local big city has spent money on to "beautify" the area, I'd rather see something like that.
