Utilizing Space

January 18th, 2007 at 11:40 pm

One thing that I notice in Japan is that they utilize the space they have much better than we do in the US. On this morning's walk, I came across a building where they had converted the rooftop into several tennis courts where they were conducting classes. Not something you would likely see in the US

we have friends who moved here from japan and they commented on the same thing... personally i think we could learn a thing or two from them, especially where COL is high and space is precious...
and actually i've seen something similar to that here in hawaii.... we were at a large hotel and across from the hotel (but before the parking structure was another building... the bottom floor housed a spa/boutique, next floor up housed the weightlifting and cardio rooms as well an outdoor area that had a jacuzzi and pool... and the third floor was tennis courts...

actually, i went to college at emory in atlanta, and they have 4 tennis courts on the roof of their gym. the gym itself was partially built into a hillside, so the courts appear to be at ground level and there are 4 more courts lined up on the actual ground beside them on one side of the gym. on the other side of the gym they used the wall to build stadium seating for the soccer field and track. very ingenious!
